The USDA Forest Serivce and Parks Dept. of Springfield, MA created the Mobile Community Tree Inventory System to allow arborists, tree managers, city foresters and consultants to walk about their communities and gather information on the locations and conditions of trees.

The System has been designed to allow the gathering of information with the use of a PDA (Palm device) that is loaded with the MCTI software, or a Paper Tally sheet. Once the information is gathered, the data from the PDA or Paper Tally sheet is uploaded to a desktop database (which also contains the MCTI software) where it merges with data gathered from previous uploads. Thus creating a central database of all the trees within a community.
