Tree
Training for Today and Tomorrow
-
TNY is working
to motivate, educate, train and integrate our youth into
education and volunteer activities through programs designed
in cooperation with the NYC DPR and the NYC Board of Education.
TNY won the coveted US Forest Service's National Urban
and Community Forestry Advisory Council Challenge Grant
for Model Citizen Programs (a one-time grant) in 1994.
The USFS has designated the Program as a national model.
There are presently 3 program components: primary and
secondary education; and a third job training program.

The Great Cookie Lesson
- Interactive Field Curriculum
for Young Children is hands-on instruction using tree
cross sections (cookies) to explore a variety of topics
concerning the relationship of a tree's life within a
historical, meteorological, ecological, and scientific
context. The goal is to stimulate the natural curiosity
of children. TNY works with science coordinators and teachers
to tailor the program to the appropriate needs of children
according to age.

Young
Citizen Pruners
- The TNY Young Citizen
Pruner Program (YCPP) provides a NYC Board of Education
approved academic credit, training, and lifetime skills.
It offers both academic and community service opportunities,
and is now in many schools and part of the required curriculum
for the HS for Environmental Studies. The program expands
as funding allows.
- It has also become an
after-school/summer training program at settlement houses
and other establishments including the prominent Henry
Street Settlement House, West Harlem Action Coalition,
the Community League of West 159th Street, and Magnolia
Tree Earth Center. It is a year round component at these
sites.
- Program graduates receive
Young Citizen Pruner Certification issued jointly by TNY
and the NYC DPR. This certification gives tangibly recognized
value to the newly acquired knowledge and skills gained
by the students. The YCP Program has successfully trained
over 1300 Young CP. Students have received summer and
after-school jobs based on their training. Some graduates
have even received credit toward their college tuition
in return for a commitment to care for campus trees.
Afterschool
and summer youth program funding is generously provided by
the Levitt Foundation. |

Job
Training for Youth
and Young Adults
- (The Young Foresters Training
Program) is a TNY initiative based on the notion that
working with trees can translate into an economic future.
There is a niche for employees and entrepreneurs in this
area of small business. We will be working with BIDs,
tree contractors, local development companies, and small
business consultants in order to provide the greatest
potential for placement. The specialized curriculum was
developed to include additional field work and to allow
for the wide range in age and educational background.
We are in the process of identifying funding..
